Abstract

Elision (hadhf) in Arabic language is the omission of a part of a sentence or even a whole sentence due to a clue which indicates it. Elision is a kind of rhetorical brevity and it is a very significant chapter of rhetorical discussions. It leaves a deep impression on the readers or listeners from the perspectives of meaning and sense of the statements. Looking from the angle of its elements, it is necessary for the speaker or the writer to know its essential, objectives the types to make the speech comprehensive. If these three things are not regarded, the speech become worthless or rubbish. Consequently, the speech loses its beauty, attraction and delicacy. The Holy Quran is the divine speech whose similitude cannot be produced. The rhetorical elision in it is one dimension of its inimitability, and the context of its elision are many. No Muslim can disregard the understanding of elision if he wants to understand the Quran truly. It does not matter whether he is a commentator or a jurist etc. but how does the rhetorical elision effect the reader of the Quran and in his true understanding of the Quran? And what is the relationship between rhetorical elision and the inimitability of the Quran? This paper explores for the answers of these questions.
